The Story Behind
“Perspective is the Best Medicine”
Where does Perspective is the Best Medicine come from? Here’s the back story. And the short version. I learned it from my father, Louis Glickman.
My Dad was a double-amputee from World War II. While fighting for the U.S. Army in Germany, he stepped on a land mine that led to him losing his left arm (at the shoulder) and his left leg (below the knee).
Despite his war injuries, my Dad went onto live an incredibly productive and meaningful life. He walked with the aid of a wooden prosthesis on his leg, and handled his upper body challenges with the use of just his one arm.
My Dad never let his war injuries define him….or stand in the way of practically anything he wanted to do. He wanted to fly a plane, he learned to fly a plane. He wanted to build a workshop in his garage, he built a workshop in his garage. He always said, “We can’t choose what happens to us in life, but we can choose how we deal with it.”
The driving force behind his approach to life was Perspective. Whenever people would ask him why he never got angry at the hand he been dealt (or lost, as it were), he always had the same answer.
“I put it In perspective. There are soldiers whose injuries were far worse than mine. Yeah, I lost an arm and a leg. But I’m still here. And I can find ways to do almost anything I want. How can I possibly feel sorry for myself when I look at the big picture…..when I put things in perspective.”
Dad’s ability to use perspective as a motivational tool also served as the foundation for his incredible sense of humor. The two went hand in hand, no pun intended.
And I consider myself blessed to have inherited his sense of humor….and learned his life-changing lessons of how Perspective is the Best Medicine.
So that’s the very short back story. Look for the full story in my new book Perspective is the Best Medicine, scheduled to be released in 2020.
